Aug. 1, 2019 marked the 200th birthday anniversary of Herman Melville’s birthday. To celebrate, The Enjoy Troy Co. has adjusted our beloved “enjoy troy.” oval to look like the white whale Moby-Dick.
In the 19th century, Melville lived in Lansingburgh (now part of Troy) for a time, during which he wrote two books (“Typee” and “Omoo”).
On March 29, 1647 a Melville’s ancestors, the Gansevoorts, would have witnessed a white whale that swam all the way up the Hudson River to an island in Cohoes across the river from Lansingburgh.
